Hunger Games, affective labour, femininity, and compulsory heterosexuality
An excellent analysis of the ways the film emphasizes the social construction of the feminine.
Hegemony, or who gets to determine what is 'appropriate' viewing for children

"While the MPAA board pretends to be a source of neutral and non-ideological advice to parents, it all too often reveals itself to be a velvet-glove censorship agency, seemingly devoted to reactionary and defensive cultural standards. In the “Bully” case, the board has ended up doing what it usually does: favoring the strong against the weak, further marginalizing the marginalized, and enforcing a version of “family values” that has all sorts of unspoken stereotypes about gender and sexuality and race and other things baked into it"

The Male Gaze
Here is an article that's caused a lot of discussion on the internet. A male journalist proclaims that the female body is consumable, as the title states: "Why men can't -- and shouldn't -- stop staring at women."

Cosmetic Line for the Physically Abused -- Amsterdam
The Dutch police produced this advertisement for a fictitious cosmetic line called "my secrets," a makeup line designed for physically abused women. Fake projects include a sterilizing moisturizer to clean dry blood wounds and a black eye eye shadow kit to hid a black eye as a trendy smokey eye.
I found this on the company that made the commercial, Leo Burnett, and I had to further research it because it wasn't clear to me that it was fake. The reason for its conception was to raise awareness of the prevalence of domestic violence. As far as I know this campaign was only in Amsterdam.

Bella who? I'm on TEAM KATNISS
I saw this on Yahoo! articles and I have to admit, when I read it I felt I did a little fist pump. 'Hunger Games' beat 'Twilight''s opening weekend earnings and has one of the three most successful box office weekends of all time!
"Box Office Shocker: 'Hunger Games' Third-Best Opening Weekend of All Time"
After seeing this movie this makes me extremely happy. I love that a movie carried by a female lead who has ability, smarts, and wit as well as a movie that doesn't use 'Team Peeta' and 'Team Gale' as a crutch to hold an audience's interest can prove to be profitable at the box office. In my opinion, this was possible because of Team Katniss, hands down.

Cause and Effect of Media on Young Girls
The representation of women in the media has serious long term effects.
This video, co-produced by Miss Representation, addresses that 'Only 21% of girls believe they have what it takes to be a leader. Yet 9 out of 10 teenage girls have not given up completely on leadership. There is hope'."

"Q: What advice do you share with young women?
"Q: What advice do you share with young women?
A: I tell young women: Listen. Speaking, telling the truth and listening is the key. Sometimes a mom will come up to me and say her teenage daughter doesn't know who I am. I don't care if she knows who I am. I care if she knows who she is."
This is why I love her.

See Britney Spears Grow Up Before Your Very Eyes
"Let her fixed, perfectly white smile be your guide, as you watching Britney morph from baby to adult. It's like being on an emotional and slightly creepy rollercoaster—especially during the dark period that starts around the :40 mark—but it's a ride worth taking. [Via Buzzfeed]"

ten literific female heroines
Flavorwire released a list of what they believe to be ten of the most powerful female heroines in literature. I'm not sure if I agree with all of them (I especially don't agree with Eowyn, as she is the ONLY female to consistently appear in the entire series), but it is interesting nonetheless. Anyone have any additions?

Forum on Girls and the Ambition Gap
Girls and the Ambition Gap | KQED
A recent study commissioned by the Girl Scouts found more than a third of girls surveyed between the ages of eight and 17 said they would not feel comfortable trying to be a leader. We look at the so-called gender ambition gap. What can be done to help raise strong and self-confident girls?

Bisexual stereotypes, anyone?
I think they might have managed to mention everything we put on the board in class with Robyn Ochs. In this episode, entitled "Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl," Carrie dates Shawn, who is bisexual. She sees him again after this scene in the cafe, but breaks up with him later in the episode, saying she is an "old fart." It seems as if she's leaving because she can't handle his "young" lifestyle, which leaves the viewers to believe his bisexuality is a lifestyle that he will eventually outgrow (as all the bisexual men Carrie knew in college appear to have done). This aired in 2000.
