Jessie Klein's new WMC Feature on how the culture of bullying damages children and teens.
Girls get called “slut” every day. My students are so used to getting bullied and harassed they can’t imagine a school without bullying. A student in one of my classes once said, “Get over it.” They look at me like I’m some kind of crazy pollyanna professor when I suggest that it doesn’t have to be...
Is concern over girls' sexualization justified?
Ruth at The F Word (UK) blog asks whether the panic over girls’ sexualization is justified and/or whether it distracts from the issue of gender stereotyping.

"The Photoshop Effect"
The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty ad showing a woman's face distorted by computers is rather well-known, but this video goes into more depth about the process of photoshopping. The man in the film estimates that 99.9% of all images we see of celebrities are photoshopped; they hire professionals to comb through the media and don't let them release photos without their approval.

Liz Trotta Refuses to Apologize for Blatant Sexism
Here is a link to Liz Trotta's next appearance on FOX News in which she "confronts" outcries against her previous remarks. Not only does she say that she will not apologize because what she said was "fact," but she questions all female presence in the military.
The video is 8 minutes long, but around minute 5 she stops commenting on her previous remarks and launches into a scripted rant on women in the military.

BU Hockey Player Arrested for Rape
As we talked about in class today- consent, rape, sexuality etc.
In the news this week a Boston University hockey player has been accused of rape and suspended from the team indefinitely. This is the second BU hockey player this year. If you're interested in reading the story (plus the follow up thoughts from the BU coach who perhaps learned from Penn State and Syracuse on due diligence...check out these links to Boston.com)
Also if you think back to Jackson Katz's presentation- check out the language of the articles and the law enforcement, coach, journalist, etc.

Women in the military should 'expect' to be raped (Fox News Corespondent)
Abbey Bemis and I were chatting about this in the library this evening- she had seen it earlier and my research advisor had just passed it along to me.
"Its strictly been a question of pressure from the feminists... and the feminists have also directed them really to spend a lot of money they have sexual counselors all over the place, victims advocate, sexual response coordinators....to support women in the military who are now being raped too much..."
John Stewarts response...

AKB48: Japanese girl band
Here is a video I'm referencing in my senior research and I thought that it pertains to the class as well. It's an extremely popular girl band in Japan called AKB48. The juxtaposition of sexuality and girly cute-culture is...interesting. It's in Japanese, but you don't need to understand it to get the message. My 10-year-old host sister first showed it to me while I was in Japan and kept saying how cute everything was. I sat there in shock for a second.
It's interesting. Check it out! ^_^
Oh, and check out the viewer statistics for the video. It's kind of creepy.

Peggy Orenstein on Gender and Parenting
Interesting interview featured in the Washington Post, where Orenstein, the author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter, discusses how certain gender stereotypes are seeping into the way children play and see themselves, and how parents can offer alternatives.

A successful way to portray diversity in children's books
The classic children's book by Ezra Jack Keats turns 50 this year. When it came out in 1962, it was one of the first major kids' books to feature a non-caricatured black protagonist. It became a huge hit, and was embraced by parents, teachers and children of all colors.

fascinating article on dads and daughters
Exciting research from Stanford University just out concerning "The Effect of a Child's Sex on Support for Traditional Gender Roles." Guess what, being a parent to a baby girl makes men more interested in equality!
